Mini Block Make - A Glasses Case

Mini Blocks are incredibly fun to make (well, I find them to be) but I found mine accumulating, unused. Not ideal, really. Which is why I am very pleased to have used five mini quilt blocks to make a case for my magnifying glasses. The glasses came with a simple and very boring black sleeve, which I kept as the base. Covered with tiny little patchwork blocks it looks so much prettier!

This project used five blocks that I've had sitting around for years. Three are from my free patterns, and one is a miniature (and - oops! - ever so slightly modified) version of a block by Alyce Blythe of Blossom Heart Quilts called Starshine.

The blocks each finish at 1.5" square and happened to be the perfect size for my needs. I laid them out on the existing case, spread them evenly, then measured the gaps to figure out how to cut the black background fabric. Rather serendipitously the existing sleeve was 6" tall and 5.5" around so everything fit on nicely. Here's a photo mid construction:

The black of the case was showing through the white fabric in the blocks, dulling it somewhat, so I cut up some scraps of white fabric to place behind the blocks before sewing it to the case. I didn't bother attaching it to anything, just sat it under. I figure it's not likely to shift around, given the case won't experience a lot of movement.

I'm so, so happy with my glasses case now. It makes me smile whenever I see it, and the blocks are much happier on show and in use than they were in the cupboard. The funny thing about this though? I recently found out I need reading glasses and now have a prescription pair, so these glasses don't often get used! Oh well. The case is on display in my craft room, and I'm still happy.

Have you made any mini block projects?
